So when we were in Kauai in March 2010 for my sister's awesome wedding, our second-best experience of the trip was roaming Secret Beach.
The surf was incredibly high that day, so we weren't able to go in the water. Imagine our surpirse when we visited the beach again in October, and it was fully twice the size from our first visit. The best part: the low surf uncovered miles of lava fields full of perfect, crystal-clear pools for swimming, or in my case, shrieking about fish.
FISHES!
We hiked for about a mile out onto the shelf.
We basically spent the afternoon hanging out here like it was a hotel hot tub. There was also a waterfall falling from the cliffs at our back, because of course there's a perfect waterfall tumbling into the warm crystal waters on the deserted island of my dreams. And then after that we rode our unicorns down the powdery white beach and had afternoon tea with Care Bears, because Kauai is ridiculous and perfect.
Sadly the pictures of the waterfall (and the unicorns) didn't turn out, but here's the beach with the Kilauea lighthouse in the background:
And here's the beach in March. The lava pools are right where the big (20 foot) waves were crashing.
I wanted to get my picture taken in this cave under the red cliffs, but the cave was full of HUGE yellow spiders, so this is me running away from the cave:
